- Get your documents ready now: high school transcript or GED, driver’s license, birth certificate or Social Security card and, for veterans, your DD-214. Several programs turn away applications that are missing documents.
- Brush up on algebra and reading. Most electrical and pipe trades programs give an aptitude test before the interview.
- Programs marked “Employer-sponsored” want you hired first. Call contractors that belong to that association and ask for a helper job.
Public-sector trainee jobs (civil service)
These are city and transit jobs, not union apprenticeships. Most are filled through civil-service exams or CityJobs postings, so you apply to the agency, not a training program.

- 🔴 NYC DEP Apprentice (Construction Laborer): Two-year paid apprenticeship in water and sewer operations; no experience required, Class B CDL within 6 months. The last posting has closed; watch CityJobs for the next one. Details →
- 🔴 NYC DEP Water/Wastewater Systems Operation Specialist Apprentice: 24-month registered apprenticeship at upstate reservoir sites. The last posting closed Mar 30; watch CityJobs. Details →
